Cool Hand Luke Failure to Communicate - 2806 Words

Released in 1967, â€Å"Cool Hand Luke† continues to be one of the most popular movies in American history. (Belton, 2008) The movie starred famed actor Paul Newman and was based on the trials and tribulations occurring inside a Florida prison camp. One of the main reasons why Cool Hand Luke continues to be relevant today is due to its incisive observations regarding the criminal justice system. While the movie was released over forty years ago, the relevance of Cool Hand Luke continues today. In the fact scene, as mentioned earlier, Lucas is seen cutting the heads off of parking meters and being sent to jail for two years as a result. (Belton, 2008) For someone unfamiliar with the justice system, this sentence would appear unduly harsh. Two years in jail for essentially a victimless offense is the kind of sentence that would inspire great skepticism regarding the mission of the criminal justice system. People are frequently sentenced to lesser prison terms for far greater offenses, so the sentencing scene would have confused a person unfamiliar with the criminal justice system. (Cole, 2000) A second impression that would be made on a person unfamiliar with the criminal justice system would be the lack of importance that mitigating circumstances would have on sentencing in Florida. Luke was a decorated war hero, and his service to his country is the kind of thing that many would assume would buy him some leniency, especially for a crime without a direct victim. (Cole, 2000) Luke’s service clearly did not factor in as a mitigating circumstance given the fact that he was sent away to a labor camp for two years.
